- Greenhouse / light-deprivation. A middle path — natural sunlight with some environmental control, which can mean more than one harvest a year and tidier, more weather-protected flower while keeping much of the sun-grown character.
- Indoor. Fully climate-controlled rooms under lights. It's the most resource-intensive but gives a grower total control over the environment, often yielding dense, tightly trimmed flower and the ability to run year-round.

Growers who work this way are usually chasing a fuller, more complex aroma and flavor profile, and many pair it with organic or regenerative practices. Hand-finishing covers what happens after the plant comes down: a slow, controlled dry; hand-trimming to preserve the flower's structure and aromatic surface; and a proper cure in jars or bins over weeks. Rushed, machine-trimmed, fast-dried flower is cheaper to produce — and you can usually tell. Hand-finished craft flower is the opposite of a rush job.
How do I spot real Vermont craft on the shelf?
A few honest signals, in roughly descending order of reliability:
- Check the producer name and license. Every legal item names its cultivator. If it's a Vermont grower, that's your first and best signal it's in-state.
- Look for batch and harvest info. Craft lots are often dated or batch-numbered. Small, specific batches are a good sign; an anonymous, ever-present house product is a different thing.
